As many of you know, I\u2019ve been working as an economist in Shanghai for a number of years, and have been studying market trends, focusing particularly on those of China and Japan. Today, I\u2019m going to give a short talk on economics in East Asia more broadly. As I\u2019m sure many of you know, at the moment, market conditions in the East present a number of challenges to businesses looking to trade there, in addition to many opportunities. Overall, economies in that part of the world are enjoying robust growth, but in many countries, Thailand for example, it can be difficult to recruit employees trained in hi-tech industries, such as artificial intelligence, and other countries such as Vietnam are likewise having issues with high-end manufacturing. This is because of two main issues: first and foremost, there is a dearth of advanced industrial training available there, meaning that many companies are simply not able to manufacture their products in these countries, at least not without investing significant capital in the training of their workers. There is also a lack of the infrastructure required for such fields, like stable power grids and high-speed internet. Some areas of Myanmar, for instance, can have power fluctuations so severe, on a graph it looks more like a rollercoaster, than anything else, and countries such as Laos and Cambodia have internet connection speeds which are too slow for many industries. <\/em><em>Another big problem, from the perspective of western companies looking to enter these markets, are the high costs of compliance with local laws and regulations. Many countries, China for example, place major barriers to entry for foreign companies, giving preference instead to homegrown companies and industries. This can mean that, for smaller businesses, it is simply too costly to enter the market alone, and many have to enter into joint ventures with existing Chinese companies in order to be competitive in the market there. However, if these initial barriers can be solved and problems mitigated, the astronomic growth of this region can make doing business there a very profitable enterprise indeed, and many companies are still making a profit, in spite of the difficulties I mentioned earlier. While the GDP growth of many countries there has started to weaken, there remains tremendous market potential for businesses offering innovative products.
