Well, the most obvious answer is the technology behind it. When my parents went to school, the best they had in terms of resources were textbooks and dictionaries. Now, I can get my smartphone out in class and find a word or phrase instantly. There also exist apps which can help you to practice your pronunciation, translate texts simply by taking a photo of it, and many others, too. It\u2019s also much easier to find newspapers and articles in the target language. In the past, you\u2019d need to get them posted from the country in question, so if you were learning Chinese, Japanese, or another language like that, you\u2019d have to wait weeks for it to arrive. Now, I can find more resources than I could ever possibly read, simply by pressing a few buttons.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>How likely is it that language learning will become unnecessary in the future, in your opinion?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>I doubt that we\u2019ll see the end of language learning, at least, not in our lifetimes. They might one day invent an algorithm or software that can process language as easily as we can, but for the moment, the technology just isn\u2019t good enough. Google Translate, for example, is great if you\u2019re looking to understand the general meaning of a difficult text, and you don\u2019t have the time to sit down and look up dozens of words. But the grammar that comes out, especially in more difficult languages like Chinese or German, is terrible, and very often, they can\u2019t pick up hidden meanings or cultural references behind words.
