First, deoxygenated blood is pumped from the right side of the heart out towards the lungs. It flows through the pulmonary arteries to the right and left lungs where oxygenation can occur. The oxygenated blood then flows back to the heart through the pulmonary veins, this time entering the left side. Again, the blood is pumped out through the heart, this time carrying oxygen. Some blood is diverted to the upper body, which it transfers its oxygen to tissues in the chest, neck, and head. The rest flows through the aorta where it deposits its oxygen with tissues in the liver, the digestive system, and the lower body.
