The Shroud, which purports to be the linen cloth in which the body of Jesus was wrapped after his death, is currently under the protection of the Holy See.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Many religious people are convinced that the image which can be seen on the shroud is the authentic visage of Jesus Christ. The image does bear a striking resemblance to paintings of him, and several scientific theories support the idea. One such theory holds, for example, that the image was created by UV light, which caused a rapid aging of the fabric and is responsible for the discoloration. This, coupled with the fact that it would have been pressed against the face of a corpse, could very well explain how the image came to be, and why it is not perfect.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">One of the biggest issues facing people who propose this version of events is the carbon dating which was carried out in 1988. This carbon dating put the actual age of the shroud at 700 or 800 years old; far too recent to be the life of Jesus Christ. However, it has been theorised that the section in question might have been subject to repair hundreds of years after the fact, and that this scientific evidence should not be trusted as a result.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Interestingly, several dark stains also exist on the shroud, which it has been widely assumed are blood stains. Indeed, some scientific tests carried out on the sample identified iron oxide, which is what haemoglobin would have turned into over time. Another analysis of the stains indicated that the blood, in fact, belongs to the AB group of blood types.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">We may never fully know the origins or authenticity of the shroud, and speculation is the best we might ever be likely to engage in.
