Guess what, Spanish does. A lot. Everywhere. But how can you know if you need to put an accent at all? In the next section you\u2019ll discover it!<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"post-55022-_oqrzn13yaz8w\"><\/a>Spanish rules of accentuation<\/h2>\n<p>There are three different kinds of words, depending on their syllabic division and accentuation: <strong><em>agudas<\/em><\/strong>, <strong><em>llanas<\/em> <\/strong>and <strong><em>esdr\u00fajulas<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3><a id=\"post-55022-_w7g3cd6smtk2\"><\/a>Agudas<\/h3>\n<p>We are speaking about words that have the stress on the very last syllable. We\u2019ll write the accent (<em>tilde<\/em>) on those words whose last syllable ends in a vowel, the letter \u201cn\u201d, or the letter \u201cs\u201d. <strong>E.g.<\/strong><em> rinc\u00f3n, alg\u00fan, comp\u00e1s. <\/em>You won\u2019t put an accent on words ending in a consonant other than \u201cn\u201d or \u201cs\u201d. <strong>E.g.<\/strong> <em>infantil, jugar, comer.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><a id=\"post-55022-_jyhuqyes66hi\"><\/a>Llanas<\/h3>\n<p>The words with the stress on the second last syllable. They always have an accent (<em>tilde<\/em>) with the exception of words ending in \u201cn\u201d, \u201cs\u201d and in a vowel. <strong>E.g.<\/strong> <em>\u00e1rbol, l\u00e1piz <\/em>\u2260 <em>suerte, hambre,<\/em> <em>canciones<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><a id=\"post-55022-_n5b55d9s3sdg\"><\/a>Esdr\u00fajulas<\/h3>\n<p>The last group contains words with the stress on the third last syllable. All the words of this group have an accent (tilde). <strong>E.g.<\/strong> <em>n\u00famero, l\u00e1grima, c\u00f3mico. <\/em>We also have words called \u201csobreesdr\u00fajulas\u201d: words having the stress on a syllable prior to the third last syllable. They also always come with an accent. <strong>E.g.<\/strong><em> tr\u00e1gicamente, d\u00edgaselo<\/em>. If you thought that was all, we&rsquo;re sorry to say there&rsquo;s more. Indeed, there are many other rules related to accents in <strong>Spanish<\/strong>. E.g. Direct questions: <em>\u00bf<strong>Qui\u00e9n<\/strong>?<\/em> (Who?); <em>\u00bf<strong>Qu\u00e9<\/strong>?<\/em> (What? \/ Which?); <em>\u00bf<strong>D\u00f3nde<\/strong>? <\/em>(Where?); <em>\u00bf<strong>Cu\u00e1ndo<\/strong>?<\/em> (When?); <em><strong>\u00bfPor qu\u00e9?<\/strong><\/em> (Why?); <strong><em>\u00bfCu\u00e1nto?<\/em><\/strong> (How much\/many?); and so on. Indirect questions: <em>No s\u00e9 c\u00f3mo hace<\/em> (I don\u2019t know how he\/she does).<\/p>\n<h3><a id=\"post-55022-_2nd3m8a3hu5q\"><\/a>Demonstrative Pronouns<\/h3>\n<p>Spanish accents are used in demonstrative pronouns to differentiate them from the demonstrative adjectives, which are identical except that they don\u2019t have an accent mark.\u00a0 <strong>Pronouns<\/strong> take the place of a noun, while adjectives describe nouns. E.g. <em>No quiero comer este postre, prefiero <\/em><strong><em>\u00e9se<\/em><\/strong> (I don\u2019t want to eat this dessert, I prefer that one). Here are some demonstrative pronouns: <strong><em>\u00e9ste<\/em> <\/strong>(this); <strong><em>aqu\u00e9l<\/em> <\/strong>(that over there); <strong><em>\u00e9sa<\/em> <\/strong>(that); <strong><em>aqu\u00e9llas<\/em> <\/strong>(those over there); <strong><em>eso<\/em> <\/strong>(that); etc.<\/p>\n<h3><a id=\"post-55022-_e1fbttvqxdr6\"><\/a>Homonyms<\/h3>\n<p>There are some words which have two different meanings depending on one tiny difference: the accent.<br \/>\nHere are some common Spanish homonyms:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><strong><em>tu<\/em><\/strong> (possessive adjective: your) &#8211; <strong><em>t\u00fa<\/em><\/strong> (subject: you)<br \/>\n<strong><em>el<\/em><\/strong> (masculine article: the) &#8211; <strong><em>\u00e9l<\/em><\/strong> (personal pronoun; he)<br \/>\n<strong><em>se<\/em><\/strong> (reflexive and indirect object pronoun) &#8211; <strong><em>s\u00e9<\/em><\/strong> (I know)<br \/>\n<strong><em>si<\/em><\/strong> (if) &#8211; <strong><em>s\u00ed<\/em> <\/strong>(yes)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2><a id=\"post-55022-_9gsgj814uum6\"><\/a>How to improve your Spanish pronunciation<\/h2>\n<p>If you want to <a href=\"https:\/\/global-exam.com\/blog\/en\/general-spanish-why-it-is-important-to-have-good-pronunciation-in-spanish\/\">improve your pronunciation in Spanish<\/a>\u00a0and have a <strong>great accent<\/strong>, you should follow these tips!<\/p>\n<h3><a id=\"post-55022-_7dh77tc1fjet\"><\/a>Learn vowel sounds<\/h3>\n<p>It\u2019s important for you to know that, contrary to English,<strong> Spanish pronunciation<\/strong> is pretty regular, which means that each vowel has only one sound.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>A is pronounced like the \u201ca\u201d in \u2018\u201dcar\u201d<br \/>\nE is pronounced like the \u201ce\u201d in \u201cbed\u201d<br \/>\nI is pronounced like the \u201cee\u201d in \u201cbee\u201d<br \/>\nO is pronounced like the \u201co\u201d in \u201cgo\u201d<br \/>\nU is pronounced like the \u201coo\u201d in \u201ctoo\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>There are rules for Spanish <strong>diphthongs<\/strong> and the dieresis. \u201c<strong>ue<\/strong>\u201d and \u201c<strong>ui<\/strong>\u201d after the letter \u201cq\u201d and \u201cg\u201d are read \u201c<strong>e<\/strong>\u201d (like in \u201cbed\u201d). E.g. <em>guerrilla, queso<\/em>, <em>qui\u00e9n<\/em>, etc. If there\u2019s a <strong>dieresis<\/strong> it is read like separate sounds: \u201c<strong>\u00fci<\/strong>\u201d. E.g. <em>ping\u00fcino (t<\/em>his case is very rare).<\/p>\n<p>The best way to reinforce this skill is to listen to native speakers and copy what they do. You can find a Spanish friend for a language exchange or look for a native teacher!<\/p>\n<h3><a id=\"post-55022-_h5p8qlk9v2i6\"><\/a>Beware of accents!<\/h3>\n<p>To <a href=\"https:\/\/global-exam.com\/blog\/en\/general-spanish-learn-how-to-read-in-spanish-with-the-correct-pronunciation\/\">read in Spanish with the correct pronunciation<\/a> the general rule is to <strong>put the stress on the second last syllable of a word<\/strong>. E.g. <em>Casa<\/em> (house), <em>manzana<\/em> (apple), <em>domingo<\/em> (Sunday), etc. Otherwise, words are marked with an accent, as we saw in the previous sections. E.g. <em>m\u00fasica<\/em> (music), <em>coraz\u00f3n<\/em> (heart), <em>sart\u00e9n<\/em> (pan).<\/p>\n<p>With practice, accentuation will become intuitive. Until then, there are some exercises you can do to help you practice. For example, while listening to an audiobook that comes with the text you can: 1) Simply listen to the audio track and read the text at the same time; 2) before listening, try to read aloud and them verify with the audio track; 3) try to underline the vowels you think are stressed in the text and then verify with the audiobook.<\/p>\n<h3><a id=\"post-55022-_neaw9s9tum74\"><\/a>Practice \u201cr\u201d sound<\/h3>\n<p>The letter \u201c<strong>r<\/strong>\u201d in <strong>Spanish<\/strong> makes two different sounds: the <em>r suave<\/em>, or soft r, and the <strong><em>r fuerte<\/em><\/strong>, or strong r. The <em>r fuerte<\/em>, or \u201crolled r\u201d, is one of the most difficult sounds for English speakers, because we don\u2019t have this sound in our native language. When is the <em>r fuerte<\/em> used?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In words with two r\u2019s in a row (e.g. <em>arriba<\/em>)<\/li>\n<li>When there\u2019s a single \u201cr\u201d at the beginning of a word (e.g. <em>rojo<\/em>)<\/li>\n<li>When there\u2019s a single \u201cr\u201d after the letters \u201cl,\u201d \u201cn,\u201d or \u201cs\u201d (e.g. <em>alrededor<\/em>)<\/li>\n<li>When there\u2019s a single \u201cr\u201d after the prefix sub- (e.g. <em>subrayar<\/em>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And how can you <strong>practice<\/strong> to have a perfect <em>r fuerte <\/em>and speak like a <strong>native<\/strong>?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>One great (and fun) tip is to pretend you are purring like a cat: try to do \u201cprrrrrrrr\u201d many times and see the changes in your \u201cr\u201d!<\/li>\n<li>Try saying the word \u201cbutter\u201d very quickly. Pay attention to the spot that your tongue hits on the \u201ctt\u201d in \u201cbutter\u201d: that\u2019s the spot where it should be when you roll your r\u2019s. Now try to say some Spanish words with <em>r fuerte<\/em>, like: <em>correr, alrededor, rostro<\/em>, etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><a id=\"post-55022-_7mgc8n8mq6pi\"><\/a>Practice \u201ct\u201d and \u201cd\u201d sounds<\/h3>\n<p>In Spanish, the letter \u201c<strong>t<\/strong>\u201d is not pronounced the same way as in English. In Spanish you have to put your tongue against the top of your front teeth, to produce a \u201ct\u201d sound which is softer than the English one. \u201c<strong>D<\/strong>\u201d sound also changes a bit. In <strong>Spanish<\/strong>, you must make the \u201cd\u201d sound with your tongue barely touching the back of your top teeth. The result is again a much softer sound. Practice these two sounds by putting them into Spanish words like: <em>tapas, t\u00edo, direcci\u00f3n<\/em>, etc.<\/p>\n<h3><a id=\"post-55022-_frc74mlvli75\"><\/a>Beware of \u201cz\u201d sound<\/h3>\n<p>There are two ways to pronounce the Spanish \u201cz,\u201d depending on the country you are in. In Latin America (and some parts of Spain) \u201cz\u201d is pronounced like an English \u201cs.\u201d In the rest of Spain the letter \u201cz\u201d makes a sound like the \u201cth\u201d in the English word \u201ctooth.\u201d<br \/>\nBoth ways are <strong>correct<\/strong>, you can choose which one you prefer, but it\u2019s important that you know what you are doing so that when you write you don\u2019t put an \u201cs\u201d instead of a \u201cz\u201d!<\/p>\n<h3><a id=\"post-55022-_tnl23ur5qrnt\"><\/a>Follow the Spanish rhythm!<\/h3>\n<p>Every language has its own accent, sounds and&#8230;rhythm.
