This stands for <em>compl\u00e9ment d\u2019objet direct<\/em>, which is the<strong> direct object pronoun in French<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>So, what exactly is a direct object pronoun? Here are some examples:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><em>Marianne regarde <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">la t\u00e9l\u00e9vision<\/span><\/em> \ud83e\udc6a<em> Marianne <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">la<\/span> regarde<\/em><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><em>Marianne regarde <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Pierre<\/span> <\/em>\ud83e\udc6a <em>Marianne <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">le<\/span> regarde<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Remember: the direct object pronoun in French is <strong>placed before the verb<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>What is the \u201cCOI\u201d?<\/h2>\n<p>Once you\u2019ve understood the COD, it\u2019s time to turn your attention to the \u201cCOI\u201d. This is the <em>compl\u00e9ment d\u2019objet indirect<\/em>, or the<strong> indirect object pronoun<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>If we take our sentence <em>Marianne regarde Pierre<\/em>, Pierre is our direct object. The two notable differences are<strong> <em>lui<\/em> for the third person singular <\/strong>(with no difference between masculine and feminine) and <strong><em>leur<\/em> for the third person plural<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Just like the direct pronouns, <strong>the indirect pronouns <em>me<\/em> and <em>te<\/em> become <em>m\u2019<\/em> and <em>t\u2019<\/em> <\/strong>before vowels or a <em>h<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s look at some examples of how we can replace the indirect object with the COI in French:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Marianne parle <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u00e0 Pierre<\/span><\/em> \ud83e\udc6a <em>Marianne <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">lui<\/span> parle<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Elle a \u00e9crit une lettre <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u00e0 ses parents<\/span><\/em> \ud83e\udc6a <em>Elle <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">leur<\/span> a \u00e9crit une lettre<\/em> (\u201cShe wrote a letter to her parents\u00a0\/ She wrote them a letter\u201d)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The indirect object pronoun is<strong> also placed before the verb<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>Verbs that don\u2019t work with a COI<\/h2>\n<p>You can often <strong>identify an indirect object by the prepositions \u00e0 (\u201cto\u201d) or pour (\u201cfor\u201d)<\/strong>. There are, however, some verbs that use these prepositions to connect with an indirect object that cannot be replaced with an indirect object pronoun in French.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve got a list below of<strong> verbs that don\u2019t work with a COI<\/strong>.
