Let\u2019s take a look at a few examples of how relative pronouns work in French:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>J\u2019ai fait une amie <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">qui<\/span> connait\u00a0mon fr\u00e8re<\/em> (\u201cI made a friend <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">who<\/span> knows my brother\u201d)<\/li>\n<li><em>Le 11 f\u00e9vrier est le jour <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">o\u00f9<\/span> tu es n\u00e9<\/em> (\u201cThe 11th of February is the day <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">[when]<\/span> you were born\u201d)<\/li>\n<li><em>Il va faire le grand voyage <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">dont<\/span> il r\u00eave<\/em> (\u201cHe\u2019s going to go on the trip <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">[that\/of which]<\/span> he was dreaming of\u201d)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Notice that each sentence in the above examples is composed of a main clause and relative clause, with <strong>the relative pronoun bridging the two<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>How to use <em>\u00ab\u00a0qui\u00a0\u00bb<\/em><\/h2>\n<p>The relative pronoun <strong><em>qui<\/em> functions as the subject<\/strong>: it tells us who or what is doing the action. We can translate <em>qui<\/em> into English as \u201cwho\u201d, \u201cthat\u201d, or \u201cwhich\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>To use qui to connect two sentences, you must first <strong>identify the noun that is functioning as the subject of the relative clause<\/strong>. Let\u2019s look at this example:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Antoine fait des cr\u00eapes. <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Les cr\u00eapes<\/span> sont d\u00e9licieuses.<\/em> (\u201cAntone is making cr\u00eapes. The cr\u00eapes are delicious.\u201d)<\/li>\n<li><em>Antoine fait des cr\u00eapes <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">qui<\/span> sont d\u00e9licieuses.<\/em> (\u201cAntoine is making cr\u00eapes which are delicious.\u201d)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In the first instance, it is<em> les cr\u00eapes<\/em> that are functioning as the subject of the relative clause. This means we can <strong>replace the nominal group with <em>qui<\/em><\/strong> to make one sentence.<\/p>\n<p>Note that <em>qui<\/em> can be shortened to <em>qu\u2019<\/em> if it precedes a word beginning with a vowel or <em>h<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h2>How to use <em>\u00ab\u00a0que\u00a0\u00bb<\/em><\/h2>\n<p>The relative pronoun <strong><em>que<\/em> functions as the COD<\/strong>, the direct object. We can translate <em>que<\/em> into English as \u201cthat\u201d, \u201cwhich\u201d, or \u201cwhom\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s an example:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Fiona lit un livre. J&rsquo;ai offert <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">le livre<\/span> pour No\u00ebl.<\/em> (\u201cFiona is reading a book. I gave her the book for Christmas.\u201d)<\/li>\n<li><em>Fiona lit le livre <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">que<\/span> j&rsquo;ai offert \u00e0 No\u00ebl.<\/em> (\u201cFiona is reading the book I gave her for Christmas\u201d)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In this example,<em> le livre<\/em> is the COD of the relative clause and can therefore be replaced with the relative pronoun. We can translate <em>dont<\/em> into English as \u201cfrom which\u201d or \u201cof which\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Take an example:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>C&rsquo;est une histoire. La fin<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> de l&rsquo;histoire<\/span> est tr\u00e8s amusante.<\/em> (\u201cIt\u2019s a story. The end of the story is very funny.\u201d)<\/li>\n<li><em>C&rsquo;est une histoire <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">dont<\/span> la fin est tr\u00e8s amusante.<\/em> (\u201cIt\u2019s a story with a very funny ending.\u201d)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In this example, <em>de l\u2019histoire<\/em> is the object of <em>de<\/em> in the relative clause.<\/p>\n<h2>How to use <em>\u00ab\u00a0o\u00f9\u00a0\u00bb<\/em><\/h2>\n<p>The relative pronoun <strong><em>o\u00f9<\/em> functions as an indicator of place or time<\/strong>. We can translate <em>o\u00f9<\/em> into English as \u201cwhen\u201d, \u201cwhere\u201d, \u201cwhich\u201d, or \u201cthat\u201d.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Je retourne dans le village. J&rsquo;ai rencontr\u00e9 mon petit ami <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">dans ce village<\/span>.<\/em> (\u201cI am returning to the village. I met my girlfriend in this village.\u201d)<\/li>\n<li><em>Je retourne dans le village <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">o\u00f9<\/span> j&rsquo;ai rencontr\u00e9 mon petit ami.<\/em> (\u201cI am returning to the village where I met my girlfriend.\u201d)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In this example, <em>dans le village<\/em> is functioning as an indicator of place in the relative clause. <strong>To bridge the two sentences together<\/strong>, we can therefore use <em>o\u00f9.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>How to use<em> \u00ab\u00a0laquelle\u00a0\u00bb<\/em><\/h2>\n<p>The relative pronouns <strong><em>lequel, laquelle, lesquels,<\/em> and <em>lesquelles<\/em> can be used with prepositions<\/strong>.\u00a0 We can translate them into English as \u201cwhich\u201d or \u201cthat\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s an example:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>La rue <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">dans laquelle<\/span> j&rsquo;habite est tr\u00e8s calme.<\/em> (\u201cThe road that I live on is very quiet.\u201d)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In this example, <em>laquelle<\/em> is in agreement with <em>la rue<\/em>, which is a feminine singular noun.<\/p>\n<h2>Learning and revising French grammar with GlobalExam<\/h2>\n<p>Do you have more French grammar questions to be answered?
