Read this article carefully to get important information about the registration process for the DALF tests.
Who can take the DALF tests
The DALF is meant to certify proficiency in the French language, so it doesn’t make sense to take it if you are already a native French-speaker!
However, if you’re not French and you need your French skills to be recognized for immigration, personal, or professional purposes, you can take the DALF examination.
That leaves one more category of candidate to whom a special registration process applies. If you are a French person whose first language is not French, you’ll have to get authorization from the National Commission for DELF and DALF to take the DELF examinations.
The two DALF tests are independent of each other and of the lower DELF examinations. This means you do not need to have already earned the DELF levels up to B2 to attempt the DALF levels C1 and C2. You may even sit the examinations for any number of certifications at the same examination session.
Where to register
You’ll need to register to take the DALF tests with any of the approved testing centers, whether you are in France or in other countries. That is, France Education International (FIE, or formally known as CIEP) is the body that administers the test and authorizes the testing centers worldwide, but you cannot register with them.
All registration is done online on the testing center’s website. The process is quite simple: just fill in some basic personal information, select which test and level you intend to take, and pay the fee. Which brings us to the next step…
How much is it?
In international testing centers, the fee to sit each DALF test is determined by the Department for Cooperation and Cultural Affairs (SCAC) of the French Embassy in that country and by the National Commission.
In France, fees are set by local academic administration authorities (rectorat).
Disclaimer: DALF test fees vary by country, by testing center, and may change every year, so be sure to check with the testing center when you register!
For example, current fees to take the two DALF tests range from $115 to $220 (€160 in France), but these fees are subject to change.
