The Bright language test is used to assess prospective international workers or just for students to test their level of language skills in English, French, Italian, German or Spanish. The Bright Español test evaluates how well a student understands the general idea and more focused details in written sentences and in audio recordings of sentences spoken in Spanish. It also assesses a student’s level of vocabulary and grammar when reading and listening in Spanish. The test can be done online and takes about 60 minutes.

What’s the basic format of the Bright Español test?
The Bright Español test includes a reading and listening section and the reading section has sentences with missing words that need to be identified. The sentences relate to different situations that might occur at work or in social settings. Candidates need to choose the correct answer from 4 different options. A separate listening section tests how well the main ideas, attitudes and more specific details are understood in audio recordings of spoken sentences in Spanish. There are 3 possible answers to choose from for this section.
The Spanish listening test lasts 30 minutes and there are 60 questions. The reading test runs for the same time with the same amount of questions. This means that there are a total of 120 questions.
The Bright Español exam does not have a speaking and writing section, but it can still provide a good idea of a person’s Spanish language ability for the A1-B1 levels of the CEFR. It can be quite a useful and effective way to quickly test groups of people.
What are the listening questions like?
An example question on the Spanish listening test might be that you hear someone speaking in Spanish about their job and then you need to choose from 3 possible options like the options below.
- Los trabajos terminarán a finales de septiembre.
- Los trabajos terminarán con más de 20.000 árboles.
- Los trabajos terminarán antes del 23 de septiembre.
You listen to the audio and choose the option that you think is correct.
What are the reading questions like?
An example of a question on the Spanish reading test would be similar to the listening example but instead of the audio there is a text to read that has a word missing. An example would be:
Ayer ____ macarrones con tomate y queso.
Then you would have four options such as these to choose from:
- comí
- guardé
- bebí
- toma
For both tests, choose the best option and move onto the next one as quickly as possible as you have a limited amount of time.
When do test takers get their scores?
The scores are immediately announced after the test is completed and the scores range from 0 to 5. The results come in the form of a Pdf document.
What are some suggestions to do well in the Bright Español test?
As with most tests it’s advisable to get plenty of sleep the night before so that your brain is ready and working properly. Whilst you are reading or listening, it is a good idea to think about the context of the text or audio. Where do you think it could be happening? Listen carefully but bear in mind that you only have about 30 seconds to answer each question.
Try to listen to and read the key words that help you understand the general meaning of the sentence rather than trying to understand every word. Identify what type of word is needed to answer the question. Think about whether there are there any grammatical clues in the sentence that might help you choose the correct answer.
In the months before the test get plenty of Spanish reading, listening and grammar practice by doing some online language tests. If you can’t find any Bright exam examples, then try some other tests such as BULATS. You can also try some online Spanish language reading and listening exercises, particularly ones that are set in the context of a workplace environment.
A general Spanish course covering grammar, vocabulary, listening and reading skills would also be useful. If you are able to have tailored 1 to 1 classes with a personal tutor, this would have obvious benefits.
