What is the aim of the listening test?

The Bright Listening section will assess how well you understand main ideas, attitudes and specific details in a recording of a spoken sentence. The test will assess your level of vocabulary, grammar and listening comprehension.

What’s the structure and timing of the listening test?

For the listening section of the Bright test you will be listening to recordings of speakers making sentences.  They could relate to a variety of different situations that might occur in a work or social setting. You need to select the correct answer from the choices given.

The test is separated into two sections of listening and reading and they last 30 minutes each. Each module consists of 60 questions with a total of 120 questions.

What are the questions like?

An example question on the listening test might be as follows.

Audio: ‘She isn’t known for having a great work ethic.’

You would need to choose from these 3 possible answers.

A. People think she is a hard worker.

B. People think she is really honest.

C. People think she is not a great worker.

The correct answer of course being …. C!

Another example might be;

Audio: ‘Customers are lining up around the block for this new phone’

You would need to choose from these 3 possible answers.

A. People have a short wait for this phone.

B. People have a long wait for this phone.

C. People are being denied purchase of this phone.

This time the answer would be ….B.

Answer the questions and move onto the next one. It’s as simple as that!

When do you get the results?

The scores are immediately announced after the test is completed and the scores range from 0 to 5. The results come in the form of a Pdf document.

What are some suggestions to do well in the Bright Listening test?

It’s a good idea to get plenty of sleep the night before the test and whilst listening, try and imagine what the situation is that the speaker is talking about as it will help you to focus. Is it happening in a restaurant, at work or at home?  Listen very carefully because each section of the recording is only played once!

Don’t worry if there are some words you don’t understand – try to listen to key words that help you understand the general meaning of what is being said.

In the months before the test get plenty of listening practise by listening to an English radio station and try some online language listening tests. If you can’t find any Bright exam examples then try some other tests such as BULATS.

A general English course covering grammar, vocabulary and oral communication would also be useful.  If you are able to have tailored 1 to 1 classes with a personal tutor, this would have obvious benefits.
