What does the Bright Deutsch test assess?
The Bright Deutsch test assesses how well candidates understand the general ideas and more specific details in written text and in audio recordings of sentences spoken in the German language. It will assess a student’s level of vocabulary, grammar and will focus on reading and listening comprehension in German.
The Bright Deutsch exam does not have a speaking and writing component but it can still provide a fair indication of someone’s German language ability for the A1-B1 levels of the CEFR and is an efficient way to test people quickly and accurately.
What is the basic structure of the Bright Deutsch test?
For the reading section of the Bright Deutsch test you will see gap fill sentences with missing words. They could relate to a variety of different situations that might occur in a work or social setting. Candidates need to choose from 4 possible answers. The listening section tests how well you understand the main ideas, attitudes and details in audio recordings of spoken sentences. For this part you need to choose from 3 possible answers to demonstrate your understanding.
What are the questions like?
An example question for the German listening test might be an audio of someone talking about electrical goods and then you might have three options to choose from such as:
- Elektrowaren sind in den meisten Ländern sehr teuer.
- Elektrizität ist in den meisten Ländern sehr teuer.
- Elektrowaren sind in den meisten Ländern sehr günstig.
The Bright Deutsch listening test lasts about 30 minutes and there are 60 questions. The reading test runs for the same time and has the same amount of questions. That’s 120 questions in total.
For both the reading and listening sections, answer the multiple-choice questions quickly and move straight onto the next one as you have limited time.
How can I do well during the Bright Deutsch test?
It’s definitely a good idea to sleep well the night before the test so that your brain functions effectively and is ready to answer questions. Whilst you are reading or listening, try and guess what the context is for each question. Is it happening in a shop, at work or maybe at home? Try to listen to and read the key words that help you understand the general meaning of the sentence rather than trying to understand each individual word. This will often be enough information to enable you to choose the correct option.
When do the results come out?
The good thing about this test is that the results are announced immediately after the test is completed. The results come in the form of a Pdf document. The test scores range from 0 to 5.
How should I prepare for the test?
In the months before the test get plenty of German reading, listening and grammar practice by doing some online language tests. If you can’t find any Bright exam examples, then try some other tests such as BULATS. You can also try some online German language reading and listening exercises and if you are able to have 1 to 1 classes with a personal tutor then this would obviously be useful as you will be able to focus on skills for the Bright test.
