What is the TOEFL?
The TOEFL iBT is otherwise known as “Test of English as a Foreign Language”. This exam is designed to test a person’s English proficiency across speaking, reading, listening, and writing.
The TOEFL exam is divided into four sections, one for each of the main communication skills. However, individual tasks can combine more than one skill. The exam is structured in the following way:
- Reading (54-72 minutes): reading passages and answering comprehension questions
- Listening (41-57 minutes): listening to recordings and answering comprehension questions
- Break (10 minutes)
- Speaking (17 minutes): talking about a familiar topic, as well as the material included in the first two sections
- Writing (50 minutes): writing a response to a written passage and a recording
The test takes approximately three hours and is delivered online. This means that there is even greater flexibility regarding when and where you sit the exam.
There are regular test sessions across the world in authorized examination centers, or test takers can even register to take a Special Home Edition test. To take the TOEFL at Home, all you need is your computerand you will be monitored online by a human proctor.

How much does it cost?
Taking the TOEFL isn’t free. To complete your registration for the test, you’ll have to pay a one-off registration fee.

This is, however, the only cost involved in taking the TOEFL. It’s only if you register late for your test session, choose to reschedule your exam, or request a score review, that you may incur further costs.

As well as being widely accepted, the TOEFL is the preferred English score for more than 80% Canadian graduate programs and nine out of ten US universities.
Secondly, the TOEFL is considered highly accurate. It covers the four key communication skills and the Speaking section is moderated by up to six examiners to ensure you get a fair grade.
