Do people in your country think it is important to protect the environment?
What do you think is the biggest environmental problem today?
What can we do as individuals to help protect the environment?

Do you think there are enough public facilities where you live?
Do you think public facilities in your town are well-kept?
What public facilities do you use regularly?

Preguntas:

How important do you consider language learning to be for your future career?

How has language learning changed in the past thirty years?

How likely is it that language learning will become unnecessary in the future, in your opinion?

Respuesta:

How important do you consider language learning to be for your future career?

I think that language learning is an indispensable part of an education, and studies have shown that it’s good for our mental well-being, too. My parents’ generation really missed out, in terms of opportunities to learn it.
Language learning is absolutely crucial for any student now, particularly students of English. In many parts of the world now, it’s impossible to graduate in many fields of study without some kind of English level. My degree, for example, requires at least a B2 level in the Cambridge test, or some kind of equivalent score in other tests, before I can pass my bachelor’s degree. On top of that, the vast majority of skilled professions also specify in their job specs that applicants must have over a certain level of spoken English, a B1 or B2 level, say. And let’s not forget that, in many professional fields, like medicine, a large amount of the data and research published online is published in English.

te explicamos la parte 4 del Speaking FCE

How has language learning changed in the past thirty years?

How has it changed in the last thirty years? Well, the most obvious answer is the technology behind it. When my parents went to school, the best they had in terms of resources were textbooks and dictionaries. Now, I can get my smartphone out in class and find a word or phrase instantly. There also exist apps which can help you to practice your pronunciation, translate texts simply by taking a photo of it, and many others, too. It’s also much easier to find newspapers and articles in the target language. In the past, you’d need to get them posted from the country in question, so if you were learning Chinese, Japanese, or another language like that, you’d have to wait weeks for it to arrive. Now, I can find more resources than I could ever possibly read, simply by pressing a few buttons.

How likely is it that language learning will become unnecessary in the future, in your opinion?

I doubt that we’ll see the end of language learning, at least, not in our lifetimes. They might one day invent an algorithm or software that can process language as easily as we can, but for the moment, the technology just isn’t good enough. Google Translate, for example, is great if you’re looking to understand the general meaning of a difficult text, and you don’t have the time to sit down and look up dozens of words. But the grammar that comes out, especially in more difficult languages like Chinese or German, is terrible, and very often, they can’t pick up hidden meanings or cultural references behind words. In the future, the technology might get clever enough to do that, but at least for now, it’s beyond its abilities
