¿Lees habitualmente? ¿Y en inglés? ¿Hace cuánto no lees un ensayo? Está claro que para prepararte para la parte de Reading del examen FCE hay que leer, pero no vale cualquier lectura ni tampoco hacerlo de forma pasiva.
Hay que tener en cuenta que la prueba de ‘Reading and Use of English’ del examen se divide en siete partes. Las primeras cuatro son de Use of English y en las tres últimas nos encontraremos con el Reading.
En esta parte del examen están poniendo a prueba tu gramática y todas las expresiones que debes conocer a nivel del B2 First.

Instrucciones y puntuación del FCE Reading part 6
En concreto hay seis huecos en el texto y hay que rellenar los espacios con las respuestas que nos facilitan en el examen. Debajo del texto aparecen las frases sacadas del texto (A-G) de forma desordenada. Hay seis huecos y siete frases, por lo que hay una que no es válida.
Cada respuesta vale 2 puntos, con una máxima puntuación de 12 puntos para esta parte del examen.
Ejercicio del Reading and Use of English part 6 FCE
Para demostrar que es menos complejo de lo que pueda sonar, aquí tenemos un ejemplo de la parte 6 del Reading que nos puede aparecer en el examen.
Preguntas:
- Several of those tribes still consider the Grand Canyon their home.
- It stretched below them into the distance, to their left and right, as far as they could see.
- About five million people visit each year.
- Only two places had been found where the river is low enough to cross it.
- In addition, they may see animals such as a bighorn sheep, and coyotes.
- Major Powell knew the trip would be dangerous.
- This activity, called white-water rafting, is very popular.
A visit to the Grand Canyon
In September 1540, a group of Spanish explorers were searching for seven golden cities that they had been told about. Suddenly, they came to the edge of what appeared to be a huge cut in the Earth. There seemed to be no way to walk around this deep canyon. MISSING SENTENCE 1 Eventually, the group turned back to the south. Today, history recognizes them as the first Europeans to see the Grand Canyon, formed by the Colorado River. They had reached a place that today is considered one of the most beautiful, strange, and interesting places in the world. European explorers did not return to the Grand Canyon for more than two centuries. Instead, native peoples continued to live there, as they had for hundreds or perhaps thousands of years.
During the nineteenth century, the population of the United States was expanding rapidly to the west. The Grand Canyon was considered a barrier to travellers. MISSING SENTENCE 2 In May 1869, Major John Wesley Powell and nine others began the first full exploration of the Colorado River. They put four wooden boats into the water at Green River Station in Wyoming. Major Powell wrote in his book that they were beginning ‘the trip down the Great Unknown’. Major Powell had served in the Union army during the American Civil War when he lost his right arm in a battle. After the war he became a professor of geology at Illinois Wesleyan University. He also studied palaeontology, the science of life existing in different periods of Earth’s history. As he was also expert in ethnology, the study of different cultures, he was the right person to explore the Grand Canyon. He was someone who could describe the geology of the area, as well as learn about the groups of American Indians who had begun living in the canyon as many as nine thousand years ago. MISSING SENTENCE 3
Today, the Grand Canyon is in a national park. MISSING SENTENCE 4 They stop at its edge and look in wonder at a place that can create great emotions in those seeing it. Others walk down the many paths into the canyon. Some tourists ride rubber boats down the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon. River guides are experts at taking the boats through the most violent rapids. MISSING SENTENCE 5 Generally, the trip takes about two weeks in boats that carry three or four people. Bigger boats with motors that carry about twenty people can make the trip in several days. As people float down the river, they see the many wonderful and strange shapes created by the forces of nature. MISSING SENTENCE 6 They experience the excitement of traveling through white-water rapids, and sleeping under the stars. The sound of the river is always present, sometimes loud, sometimes soft. After several days traveling on and sleeping near the river as it flows through the Grand Canyon, many visitors say they feel their cares and worries leave them. Their concerns are replaced by a feeling of wonder about the canyon and the powers of natur.

Tips para la parte 6 del Reading FCE
Una lista de consejos que nos servirán de cara al examen:
- Leer el texto por encima y muy atentamente: hay que saber de qué trata el texto antes de comenzar a buscar la respuesta correcta.
- Las frases más importantes son las que están antes y después de cada hueco.
- Respuestas aleatorias: no hay que seguir un orden para responder.
- El texto está lleno de pistas.
- Hay que recordar que una de las siete frases no encajará en ningún hueco.
