Which type of TOEFL test should I take?

Before you begin the registration process, take some time to consider which version of TOEFL is the right one for you.

You probably need the TOEFL IBT (internet-based test). It is by far the most popular version, and all institutions which require a TOEFL certificate accept IBT as proof of English ability. However, there is also a PBT (Paper-Based Test). Although it is being phased out, some institutions still accept PBT certificates and some exam centres still offer it, though less frequently than the IBT test.

What about registration and payment?

Registration at centres in Düsseldorf, Dortmund and Oestrich-Winkel is done directly through ETS TOEFL website at https://www.ets.org/toefl.  The first step is to visit this website and create an account. Then follow the link which says Register / Find Test Centres, Dates to submit your application.

In order to register, you will need to provide evidence of your identity. For German citizens, a valid passport, national ID, driver’s license or military ID are all acceptable registration documents. Citizens of other countries will need to present a valid passport with their application.

You will need to scan a JPEG, GIF or PNG file of your ID with a file size less than 1.5 MB, and upload it to the website when prompted. The ID should have your photograph, a number, and your signature, with all three elements clearly visible on the uploaded file.

Payments can be made by credit or debit card, e-check, paper check, Pay Pal or money order. (See https://www.ets.org/toefl/ibt/about/fees/ for payment details). Be sure to book your test well in advance, as places are often limited – IIK Düsseldorf recommends booking at least two months ahead.

There is no limit to how many times a person can register for the TOEFL exam.

How and when do I get my results?

Exam scores are posted on the ETS TOEFL website approximately 10 days after the exam date. You will receive an email when this happens.

When you register for the exam, you will be asked to create a TOEFL online account and you will receive an ETS ID number. To see your score after the exam, log in to your account and choose ‘View Scores’.

What should I bring on test day?

When you arrive at the test centre, you will need to verify your identity. Be sure that, whatever document you used in your application, you bring the same document on the day of the exam. Bring something to write with and be sure to have two back-ups. You will need a pen and a pencil since you need a pencil for the answer sheet.

How should I prepare for TOEFL?

To start, read a little about TOEFL and get familiar with the format, question types, time limits and so on. Knowing this information will get you closer to the results you need. Look at some of the many TOEFL preparation websites online to get more of an idea about tasks and strategies. You might also consider buying an official test book. If you want to be really prepared, however, consider taking a preparation course with a decent school. Personal tutors can also help, though these tend to cost more than joining a course.
