Which TOEFL is it best to take?

Firstly, you need to determine which version of TOEFL will meet your needs.
By far the most common version is the TOEFL IBT (internet-based test). Any employer or institution which uses TOEFL scores to gauge your English abilities will accept an IBT certificate. However, a paper-based alternative called the PBT also exists. It is far less widespread and will soon be phased out, but some institutions still accept PBT certificates and a few exam centers still run the paper-based exam.

What about Registration and how do I pay?

Registration is an online process which you can do directly through the ETS TOEFL website at https://www.ets.org/toefl. When you open the site, you’ll be asked to set up a TOEFL online account. After that, look for the link which says ‘Register / Find Test Centers’. You can choose your location here and submit your application to the testing center which is nearest to you.

To complete your registration, proof of identity is required. If you are a German citizen, you can use a current passport, national ID, driver’s license or military ID. Citizens of other countries must present a valid passport with their application.

Use a scanner to create a JPEG, GIF or PNG file of the document you want to use, making sure the file is under 1.5 MB. Check that the scan clearly shows your photograph, an ID number and your signature. When you’re prompted to do so, you simply upload the file.

ETS accepts a variety of payment methods, including credit and debit cards, e-checks, paper checks, Pay Pal deposits and money orders. (See https://www.ets.org/toefl/ibt/about/fees/ for more details).

It’s important to book your test well in advance, because places are often limited. Aim to register a minimum of two months before your desired test date.
There is no limit to the number of times you can register for TOEFL.

How and when do I get my results?

ETS posts exam scores on their TOEFL website around 10 days after the date of the exam. You will receive an email when your scores are published.
When you set up your TOEFL online account, you will receive an ETS ID number. After the exam, you can log in to your account to see your results.

What locations offer regular TOEFL testing in Hannover?

There are no official TOEFL testing centers in Hannover, but there are two in Hamburg (15kms away). Both of these centres run regular TOEFL exams.

What should I bring on test day?

To gain admission to the test, you will need proof of identity. Whatever document you used when you registered for the exam, bring the same document on the day. You also need to bring your own pen and a pencil for the test too.

How should I prepare for TOEFL?

You’ll probably need to spend a couple of months preparing. During this period, you should set aside specific time slots for study.

To begin with, get familiar with some basic details about the exam: the overall format, the types of questions, time limits for each section and so on. Knowing what to expect will definitely enhance your prospects. There are also a lot of TOEFL preparation websites, where you can see and practice different task types and learn some strategic approaches. An official test book can also be a useful purchase. To maximise your chances of success, you might also consider taking a preparation course at a reputable language school. Private tutors can help too, though they’re often quite expensive.
