What Is the IELTS Exam and What Does It Aim to Do?

The IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is an exam designed to test a person’s proficiency in the English language. The exam aims to equip speakers seeking to live, work or study in English-speaking countries with an official certification of their language abilities.

There are two types of test: the IELTS Academic and the IELTS General Training. You should choose which version of the test you take depending on what you intend to use your test score for. Both versions have the same 4 levels such as Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking sections composed of different and various tasks.

The IELTS Academic is designed to measure your English language proficiency for an academic environment. The exam includes more academic-level vocabulary and discussion topics and indicates your ability to apply English to university-level studies. If you’re looking to study at undergraduate or postgraduate level at an English-speaking university, this is the test for you.

IELTS Nigeria: Where Are the Test Centers Located At?

The IELTS is administered by the British Council Nigeria, who have IELTS examination centers across the country with as many as five test sessions per month. You can also find some independent test centers, but the British Council website is a good place to start.

When registering for the IELTS test, it’s best to visit and choose a nearby IELTS test center. Luckily, Nigeria has many centers scattered all over the country to help the test-takers.

What Are the Ways to Register for the IELTS Exam?

The British Council overseas registration for most of the IELTS Nigeria test centers. On the British Council website, you can select the type of IELTS you would like to take (Academic or General Training, for example), before proceeding to the booking platform.

Registering for the test follows three steps:

Selecting a test center and session
Creating an account on the British Council website
Submitting your details and paying the registration fee

In order to complete your registration, you’ll need to have an identification document to hand and a payment card. Please note that you will be asked to present the same ID in person on the day of the test.

What Is the Price Of The IELTS Exam In Nigeria?

The IELTS test costs approximately ₦79.000 in Nigeria in 2021. The price is consistent across British Council test centers for the IELTS Academic and General Training exams.

What Are the Payment Methods?

When registering for the IELTS test in Nigeria, candidates will have three different payment methods to pay for the fee:

Online payment with a card: the candidate will receive instant payment confirmation within the online registration portal.
Online payment by a bank account: the candidate will receive instant payment confirmation within the online registration portal via First Bank, GT Bank, Zenith Bank, Sterling Bank, or United Bank for Africa (UBA).
Directly by bank transfer or bank account.

Can the Exam Be Refunded in Case of Cancellation?

It can be refunded only if you cancel the exam 5 weeks before the test date – you will be eligible for a full refund minus a 25% administrative fee. If you cancel less than 5 weeks before the test date, you will not be eligible for a refund, except if:

A serious medical condition that prevents you from performing or attending.
Evidence of trauma, bereavement, or another type of significant catastrophe.
Trauma or hardship as you are being the victim of a crime or victim of a traffic accident.
Military service.

If your test center accepts your case, you will receive a 25% refund. Keep in mind that your exceptional circumstance and supporting evidence have to be sent to your test center within 5 days before the test date.

Is It Possible to Change the Date of the Exam?

Yes, you can transfer your test date, but only if:

The request is made 5 weeks before the official test date, and it will be free of charge.
The request is made within 5 weeks before the official test date because of specific conditions (same as cancellation exceptions mentioned above) and you will be charged a 25% administration fee.

You have to fill in this form and attach a piece of appropriate evidence or/and documentation for the transfer to be considered.

When Are You Going to Receive Your Test Results and How?

What Do I Need to Bring on the Day of the IELTS Test?

The most important thing to bring on the IELTS test day is your identification. Depending on what you used when you registered for the IELTS exam, your national ID or passport. You will need the same identification for your IELTS Speaking test as well.

For the IELTS paper-based test, you need to bring pencils, pens, and erasers. While for the IELTS computer-delivered test, pencils and paper will be provided for you. In case you bring your mobile phone, you will have to switch it off and leave it with your other personal belongings in a specific area.

Family members or children of the test takers will not be allowed into the IELTS test center. They will need to wait for you outside.
