Vocabulary Explanation Example
A factory / a plant A place where large amounts of goods are manufactured. My father has a car factory last 20 years.
A manufacturer Someone who produces goods in large numbers, usually with the help of machines. The company was a major manufacturer for all kinds of goods.
An industrialist A person heading a large industrial setup or an employee holding a prominent position in an industry. The industrialist owned all the steel mills in town.
Automation The use of machines that enables to eliminate manual work and reduce headcount. The factory’s automation of producing electronics has reduced the need for employees.
A company / a firm / a business An organization that sells goods or services in order to make money / revenue. He works for a software company. / A business that makes software.
Corporate life People working in an organization aiming towards achieving professional growth and success. The corporate life in this massive company keeps its employees happy enabling the company to be the earth’s most customer centric company.
Consumer goods Products that people buy for their own use. Prices of consumer goods rose by 2.5% last year.
Efficiency The good use of time and energy in a way that increases productivity of workers. What is so impressive about their country is the efficiency of the public services.
The output An amount of something produced by a person, machine, factory, country… Last year manufacturing output fell by 14%.
Smokestack industry A traditional industry that produces large machines or materials used in other industries and creates pollution in doing so. There’s been a steady decline in smokestack industries such as shipbuilding and steel.
A smokestack A tall, vertical pipe that takes smoke or steam into the air from an engine driven by steam or from a factory. The old factory’s smokestacks are crumbling, and many of the windows are shattered.
Handling The art of holding or managing things. The vase was subjected to rough handling by the removal men and suffered a few defects.
Tooling A set of equipment used for a particular purpose. The factory needs to invest in expensive new tooling to produce the new design.
Maintenance The work needed to keep objects or materials such as roads, buildings or machines in good condition. Old houses need a lot of maintenance.
A nuclear power plant Is a facility for the production of electricity using nuclear energy. A nuclear  power plant consists of nuclear reactor fuel, control rods, moderators, pressure vessels, coolant and containment.
Raw material Any material, such as oil, cotton, or sugar in its natural condition, before it has been processed for use. The cost of raw materials was going up because of their growing lack.
A release In the context of a factory, a release is normally referred to the ouster of waste products from the machines. The area around the factory is also polluted due to the excessive waste released by the machines.
A skilled worker Someone who possesses the required abilities to finish a task. A company is obliged to keep all the skilled workers if it wants to succeed.
Spare parts An extra piece that can be used to replace a piece that breaks, especially in a machine. Hopefully they kept spare parts of the machine and now they can fix it faster.
A store floor / a workshop A place where people work on machines or the space in a retail establishment where goods are sold to consumers. The impact of the energy saving has been somewhat reduced by the increase in store floor area dedicated to fresh product.
A supplier / a provider A company, person or a group of people that provides things that people want or need, especially over a long period of time. They used to be a leading supplier of military equipment.
The construction industry An industry responsible for building up a city for example, houses, apartments,  bridges, etc. The construction industry increases a lot the revenues of the country.
The motor industry An industry responsible for manufacturing vehicles for example cars. The Japanese motor industry is one of the most prominent and largest industries in the world.
The oil industry An industry that produces and delivers oil and oil products. The oil industries in Italy and other southern countries are the biggest in Europe.
The shipping industry An industry which is responsible for the transport of cargo as a business, especially on ships. Since the financial crisis, the shipping industry has been squeezed on both the supply and demand sides.
