Let’s have a quick look at a few example situations to better understand how our learning method works.
Example situation: Ladies and gentlemen
Each of the tourism situations take approximately 20 minutes to complete, walking you through a variety of activities based around a specific scenario in the tourism industry. The scenarios in each module form a continuous story with recurring characters, making learning all the more engaging.
Let’s dive into the unit based around the restaurant industry, with the situation Ladies and gentlemen. Here, one of our main characters, Sarah, welcomes a group of tourists to a restaurant and must explain the details of their lunch. Each situation has clear objectives, and here they are to learn how to:
- Welcome large groups to an establishment;
- Explain dining procedures;
- Outline schedules;
- Bring an event to a close.
Each situation will introduce you to a new set of English vocabulary for tourism that you will need to understand the various videos and texts in the scenario. Let’s look at some examples:
- expecting - believe that someone will arrive soon
- projector - a device that projects an image onto a screen
- attention - notice taken of someone or something that is interesting or important
- itineraries - planned route and places to visit on a tour
- connoisseurs - a person who has expert knowledge of something
In each situation, your comprehension will be tested with a video, an audio, and some questions. Each question is multiple choice and in case you don’t choose correctly, you’ll get an explanation to better understand where you went wrong. Check out this example question:
Choose the expressions that have a similar meaning to: “we are happy to serve you”:
- We’re honoured to be looking after you this evening.
- We’re honoured to be looking after you this evening.
- We’re delighted to welcome you this evening.
- We’re delighted to welcome you this evening.
The correct answers are B and D. If that was tricky, it’s time to brush up on your grammar!
Example situation: I think we should complain
The situations are designed to put you into real scenarios that you could encounter in the working world. Tourism isn’t all cocktails and beaches – sometimes there are problems and complaints to deal with too. This is exactly what you’ll learn to deal with in the customer relations module.
In this situation, you’ll follow Brice and Annie, two guests who must speak to the hotel receptionist about problems they’ve encountered in their room. The situation is based around the following objectives:
- To deal with complaints;
- To resolve problems for guests;
- To apologize.
Here are some examples of tourism vocabulary you could learn from this situation:
- misleading - giving the wrong idea or impression, deceptive, deceiving, false
- deal with - (phrasal verb) to do something about (a person or thing that causes a problem or difficult situation)
- turn out - (phrasal verb) prove to be the case, happen, occur
- unacceptable - not satisfactory or allowable, unsatisfactory, unsuitable, inappropriate
As you can see from these two example situations, the range of situations that a tourism professional should be equipped for can be quite varied. The benefit of developing your tourism vocabulary with us is that you’ll be prepared any scenario that comes your way!
