Success is in the planning, so let’s take a look at some specific advice for learning English vocabulary for business trips.
As you prepare for your business trip, you’ll want to consider the different types of vocabulary you could need. Let’s kick off with some key business trip vocabulary in English:
- Ahead of schedule = early.
- Behind schedule = late.
- On schedule = on time.
- To board (a train / a plane / a bus) = to enter / get on the train, the plane etc.
- To take off = when a plane leaves the ground and goes up into the air.
- To land = the opposite of to take off.
- To arrive.
- To leave.
- To book = to reserve (a booking = a reservation). These are synonyms and can be used for booking a plane ticket, a hotel room, a table in a restaurant etc.
- To travel, a trip.
Let’s not forget that travel is a verb and a noun; trip is the noun of travel. Air travel, for example, refers to the general concept of travelling by plane. A trip is the flight from Paris to the destination, for example, the time there, and the return to Paris; it’s specific.
Now let’s consider more specific vocabulary that could come in handy in different contexts on a business trip.
First of all, vocabulary for planning a trip:
- to come across - to meet by surprise
- to schedule - to plan
- fortnight - 2 weeks
- target - what you want to reach
Depending on your industry, there are bound to be difficult-to-translate words. Preparing them in advance is our advice! If your trip required you to talk about the food industry, would you know these terms:
- manufactured – fabricated
- stone ground – crushed with a stone
- shelf life – length of time you can keep a product
- delis – retailers of fine foods, short for delicatessens
A few business trip terms for dealing with injuries or emergencies:
- slipped - what happens when you walk on a wet floor
- GP - short for general practitioner
- warn - prevent
- heading - going towards
- beware - be careful
What about if you need to explain a difficult situation? Here are some ideas:
- longing - waiting for a long time
- fussy - never happy with things
- keep someone in the loop - keep someone informed
Of course, the specific vocabulary you’ll need depends entirely on your industry and the type of trip you are going on.

If you’re not sure about the best way to English vocabulary quickly, and this list of business trip terms feels a little scary, we’re here to help. Learning vocabulary is a part of any good language learning method, whether you choose to learn with a textbook, through classes, or using an online learning platform, but we’ve got two key suggestions for making your lexicon a priority.
Use post it notes
When you’re learning English, especially vocabulary, one of the best tips we can suggest is to integrate new terms into every corner of your life – by which we mean sticking new words on the door, the microwave, and your laptop. One of the simplest and cheapest tips we can think of to learn vocabulary in English quickly is to buy some post its and use them to surround yourself with useful words. By doing this, every time you prepare a meal or have a wash, you’ll be confronted with new English terms without the need to carve out time in your schedule and sit down at a desk.
Use an app
While using an app as your only method of learning English probably isn’t advisable, it’s a great way to boost one or more other methods. Language apps are usually fun and allow you to squeeze in a few minutes of revision at a time, meaning you can fit language learning into your commute or waiting in a queue.
Expand your vocabulary from words you already know
An important part of speaking a language fluidly is having lexical choice. You probably already have a good foundation in English vocabulary, so start from what you have and build out. Brainstorm the vocabulary you have for a business trip, find two new synonyms for each term, and watch your lexicon grow.

Individual lessons give you total flexibility over the schedule, as well as the content of your lesson, with the advantage of one-on-one tutoring. Our group lessons are available according to a fixed schedule and tackle specific topics, like making a phone call, giving a presentation, and participating in meetings.
